Expertise: Comparative Politics, Sub-Saharan Africa, Policing, State-BuildingDavid Dow is an Assistant Professor in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School. His research and teaching focus on topics related to post-conflict reconstruction, state-building, policing, and political violence in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.
Dr. Dow is currently working on a book project examining how post-conflict governments manage the reconstruction process to simultaneously consolidate political support and minimize threats from new insurgencies. His research focuses on two additional themes: 1) policing in the developing world; 2) migration and the factors shaping the reintegration of deportees. His work on these topics has been published in leading scholarly journals, such as the British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, and Journal of Conflict Resolution. His research has received funding from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Department of Defense’s Minerva Initiative, USAID, the World Bank, and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).
Before coming to NPS, Dr. Dow was a research scientist at the University of Arizona and a postdoc at Duke University. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley and a BA from the University of New Mexico.
