Fort Hunter Liggett "Green" Military Base for the Future

Abstract

Energy Security and Sustainability (ES2) for DOD installations is a critical aspect of operational capabilities to support DOD missions.  Renewable energy and electrical energy storage technologies are becoming more economically viable every day and may soon be the most economical method to meet energy needs.  Microgrids can further increase the functionality of those technologies and reduce the costs of implementation.  Lessons learned from recent Microgrids and how those lessons are being used to implement them into two of the Army's Net-Zero Energy Demonstration Sites, Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL) in Jolon, CA and Parks Reserve Forces Training Area (PRFTA) in Dublin, CA will be presented and discussed.

Biography

Greg Vallery is the Director of Public Works (DPW) at Fort Hunter Liggett. He assume the position in April 2014. As the DPW, Greg is responsible for direct supervision of the DPW at Fort Hunter Liggett; leading a team of professionals to provide service support to assigned commands in order to enable trained and ready Soldiers, provide comprehensive Family support, and promote quality of life services and infrastructure. He serves as the Engineering and Public Works SME for the Garrison.

Prior to his assignment as Director of DPW, he worked for twelve years at the US Army Garrison in Italy  first serving as the Chief – Environmental Division,  then as Chief - Engineering Design, and then a Chief - Engineering Division. He has also served at Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio TX in the Environmental Pollution Prevention Division and as the Environmental Air Quality Program Manager. He worked as an Air Force Support contractor-consultant at the Waste Policy Institute, a non-profit firm affiliated with Virginia Tech.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University in 1988, and later earned his Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas, San Antonio in 2002.  He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the states of Texas and Louisiana, and a Certified Energy Manager.
