Education

The Energy Academic Group offers graduate energy-focused education programs that create a cadre of military officers and government professionals who are knowledgeable in energy science, technology, policy, management and analysis.

The Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) energy academic programs explore and research means of enhancing national security by increasing our operational capabilities with the energy we use; expansion of energy supply options; consideration of energy consumption; and the associated costs and logistics challenges in all decisions about strategic planning, structuring, equipping and posturing the force.

Defense Energy Certificate Programs

Defense Energy Certificate Programs are focused on educating officers and working military and civilian employees of Department of Defense (DoD) in the basics of Energy technology (General), Energy Science & Technology (S&T) and Energy Policy & Analysis (P&A). These programs are offered at NPS to resident and non-resident students and to uniformed and civilian DoD members who do not have an opportunity to enroll in an NPS degree program. Students can also work toward certificates via distance learning (DL). Learn more

Operational Energy Certificates Program

The Energy Academic Group (EAG) has established NPS’ Operational Energy (OE) Certificate Program. Three stackable certificates have been developed for this program, which aims to provide those working military and civilian employees of the Department of Defense (DoD) the opportunity to understand the complex issues facing the Operational and Installation Energy segments of DoD and how they impact Operational Capability issues as well as military requirements. The certificate program is designed to expose students to the technical, operational, and security aspects of DoD’s energy needs. Learn more

General Military Training

In this training, you will learn about the Department of the Navy Energy program and how energy impacts warfighting capability. At the end of this training, the participant will understand how energy is critical to combat operations; Department of the Navy Strategic Energy Objectives; Energy challenges and best practices for different Naval Communities; and Actions that can be taken to become a more effective warrior. Learn more

Operational Energy Courses for Warfighters

The Operational Energy (OE) weeklong course is being developed in close coordination with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory (LL). Collectively, EAG and LL are constructing realistic practical exercises that demonstrate OE implementation in the battlespace for the totality of our Naval and Marine Corps’ forces. If your unit or installation is interested in hosting a pilot of any one day or the entire week of OE 1, please contact michael.a.davis@nps.edu to coordinate hosting an NPS team at your installation. Master’s of Operational Energy (OE)

The pending OE degree is designed to be completed by combining a sequence of NPS graduate-level certificates in areas related to computing, such as operations research, energy, war and peacetime logistics, autonomous systems, and defense energy.  The program’s flexible design provides sponsoring agencies and students the ability to achieve specific professional education goals by selecting a tailored combination of certificates. There is no thesis or capstone requirement for this degree. Learn more
