Energy Solutions: A New Energy System Design Approach

Abstract

When looking back at energy systems it appears that there was no guiding principle behind the design or technology choice that was required. We realized that the design was highly influenced by legacy systems, mainly centralized, that grew organically over the last century or so. A new energy system design approach is proposed, one that looks at the end service or product that is desired.  We use this approach to motivate the choice of architecture and design.

We will present an overview of the driving philosophy behind our approach and then some of the technologies that we are investigating. We describe this new approach, and then present some of the systems that have been designed using the approach to solve certain energy problems. We start with   facilities cooling and heating, allowing the method to be exploited. We then present the more challenging scenarios of remote outposts or forward operating bases, which have been assessed for certain high energy use, and offer solutions which would reduce the supply chain needs.

Biography

Dr. Gannon is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the Naval Postgraduate School. His area of research interest is in renewable energy, solar thermal cycles, heat transfer, gas turbines, and turbomachines. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa; he earned his Master’s degree and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
