Abstract

Base wide microgrids or critical mission microgrids must undergo normal project planning. Short cuts do not help reduce cost or project schedule time. These projects are complex and may have a combination of minor construction and repair. All requirements must be analyzed, and these items can be at multiple base locations. The cost of a base microgrid can be eight million dollars or higher. Microgrids often include energy storage / lithium-ion batteries. Spent batteries can be considered hazardous waste at the end of their life or after about twenty years. Project planning must include repurposing or disposal of lithium-ion batteries.

Bio

Rob Nordahl is a registered mechanical engineer with more than thirty-three years of DoD experience, working at U.S. Navy NAVSEA, NAVFAC EXWC and NAVFAC NBVC and U.S. Air Force AMC and ACC. Nordahl currently is the Microgrid Power Systems Team Lead and guides microgrid efforts for Standing up Academy for Microgrid Training. He leads microgrid efforts in multiple sites, including San Nicolas Island, Rota Station, Spain, and McMurdo Antarctica. Nordahl also served as a nuclear engineer for seven years at the Bechtel Power Corporation.
