Borrowing from the Dudley Knox Library

With a library account you can borrow most books, media, and federal documents.

DL students can borrow books and request articles through their Interlibrary Loan account

For how long?

  • NPS students & faculty - 3 months (renewable up to 15 months unless recalled)
  • Other users

How many items?

  • NPS students and staff - 50 items
  • NPS faculty - 100 items
  • Other users 


What can't I check out?

  • Atlases & maps, journals & periodicals, reference books, rare books, Intell books, microformat.
  • We have scanners and printers for microformat materials that enable you to print, email or burn to a CD.
  • Most Intell books have a 2nd copy in the General Collection that you can check out.
  • We will consider requests to borrow some items for short periods of time on a case by case basis. Ask at the Information Desk.

How many times can I renew?


Blocked from renewing?

  • If you have 5 or more overdue items, you will be blocked from renewing online. Contact us for assistance.
  • You can't renew recalled items. They need to be returned within 24 hours.
  • Contact the Information Desk.

  • You are responsible for items checked out under your name until the items have been returned.
  • If you are a Distance Learning student, please return library materials via Priority Mail allowing enough time for items to arrive by the due date. You are responsible for this small cost.

Lost or Damaged

  • It is your responsibility to replace lost or damaged items.
  • Replacements of items will be considered on a case by case basis with exact replacement of items as the first course of action.
  • For items borrowed through interlibrary loan,Please check with the Information Desk before ordering replacement items.
  • Many lending libraries charge a minimum of $100 per item for lost or damaged materials plus processing fees.
