Student Satisfaction
The NPS President's Student Council (PSC) conducted a survey of current students about various NPS service areas.
Of those students responding (9% resident and 5% distance learning [DL] students)
- 57% were very satisfied with the library
- 3% were dissatisfied.
Our supervisory team regularly works with the PSC and we continue to address their recommendations.
NPS conducts annual exit surveys of graduating resident and distance learning students.
Feedback from respondents (63% resident and 50% DL students) helps us focus on areas for outreach and improvement, especially with regard to our distance learners!

"Fantastic. You are the best! I really appreciate your efforts. I have to say, one of the really important benefits of staying affiliated with NPS is that you provide me with incredible material that other people do not have easy (or maybe any) access to."
- Faculty, National Security Affairs
"I absolutely LOVE the library. The group study rooms are great, the writing center is awesome, and the Starbucks is an added bonus!"
- Student, President's Student Council Survey response
Reserve a Room in the Library
On Feb 1, 2017 we launched our room reservation system for student use.
Now students, as well as staff, can log in with their NPS credentials and reserve group study rooms, nursing mothers room, and more for themselves.
Facts & Figures
Library Facility & Web Tours for New Students
All new students receive a library orientation. We supplement face-to-face tours and information sessions with an informative short video.
Extended Hours
Staff volunteer to keep the library open an additional 22 hours each quarter during the eight days leading up to and including finals. Many students take advantage of the additional library study time offered.
Conference Room Usage
Multiple conference rooms and a classroom are used by staff from the library, Graduate Writing Center, and Faculty Development for workshops, training, presentations, and briefings.
Monthly meetings of the President's Student Council and specialized users such as American Red Cross First Aid/AED Training (NPS Safety Office) and Staff Development Training (NPS Human Resources Office) make these spaces a well-utilized campus resource.

Library Spaces
In May we completed the initial phase of a project we started in FY 2010 to remove duplicate and obsolete materials from the General Collection and to clean, shelf-read and shift the entire collection.
This year:
- we removed ~27,000 physical items from ~20,000 linear feet of shelving
- shifted ~240,000 individual items
We were able to expand our inventory of sit-to-stand desks... soon to be available in the newly created study space.
