Seamless Access
Promote Seamless Access and Remove Barriers to collections, people, and services.
Single Sign-on
You asked, we listened! Starting in June 2017, NPS credentials became the single means for all library resources and services that require a login. NPS users no longer have to remember multiple logins to multiple online applications.
Homepage Redesign
As part of our new search we redesigned our homepage to feature a prominent central access point to our new search.
New design highlights:
- Self-help utility bar provides quick access to today’s hours, Ask a Librarian, and My Accounts.
- New, prominent search box makes it easy for users to search for articles, books, and more.
- Background image showcases the library’s iconic exterior, welcoming users to our online “front door”.
Restricted Resources Highlights
Restricted Resources and Services serves as the access point for NPS’s restricted and classified products, as well as the long term archive of physical copies of most NPS theses and faculty reports across the classification spectrum. A few of highlights from this year:
- Transferred the last of the hardcopy NPS theses & reports into our vault for long term protection and archiving, bringing to an end the multi-year digitization project
- Increased activity in services provided to NPS and members of the public seeking reviews and downgrades of older NPS theses, expanding the availability of NPS generated knowledge
- Implemented a major upgrade of our restricted integrated library system, to include a new server and new operating system, to ensure continued secure and responsible management of our intellectual resources
Reference & Instruction Highlights
Implementing the new library search was an all-hands library effort. The reference team took responsibility for:
- Configuring and customizing the search interface.
- Doing outreach prior to and following the launch
- Creating and updating instructional materials such as handouts, presentations, and research guides
While this was our primary focus, we also:
- provided in-person and virtual Ask a Librarian reference service
- created and maintained relevant Research Guides and searchable, timely FAQs
- offered workshops and class instruction across campus and virtually
Our instruction increased this year, due largely to increased opportunities for subject liaisons in resident, distance and hybrid classes.
With changes in library staffing, we took on new responsibilities in the areas of electronic resources procurement, management, and usage analysis.
Metadata Services Highlights
Metadata Services maintains intellectual access to the library’s rich collections through the creation and development of the discovery and retrieval environment.
- Continued making visible and organizing Special Collections & Archives and NPS Archives materials using the MPLP (More Product, Less Process) process
- Continued supporting the digital additions and metadata enhancements to NPS Archive: Calhoun
- Continued enhancing metadata for electronic format NPS theses and archiving the print format versions
- Continued batch importing of ebook records into our new integrated library system and related cleanup of legacy ebook records resulted in improved discoverability and access to new content
- Ongoing review of metadata workflows and procedures

Interlibrary Loan Borrowing
Interlibrary loan borrows materials from other libraries for NPS faculty, staff and students. Article requests are typically filled within 24 hours, while returnable materials (books, AV, etc.) take a few days.
While Interlibrary Loan Borrowing and Circulation services have experienced a slight downward trend in recent years, much of that trend is attributed to the steady increase in electronic resources (journals and ebooks) that we make available to our users 24/7.
